About Life With Dogs
Hi, Devlin here..
I believe that a dog is a reflection of God. D-O-G if reversed is G-O-D! Well, every one of His Creation reflects His Grace.
My first dog was a beagle when I was 10 years old. I was the typical Indonesian Chinese(mixed with Dutch and Javanese actually) boy who is born in Indonesia but grew up in Singapore since 8 yrs old. My parents still remain in Jakarta, Indonesia. And I am now married to Lusiana. We both live in Kensington Park Drive condo.
In Jakarta, we started with 1 Shih Tzu from a pet shop. Then a few months we bought another one. Both were female.
And we adopted one male Shih Tzu. So from 3, they multiply(purposefully) to 12. And we also have 1 Golden Retriver.
At first, they look cute. But after a while, juvenile fights break out and escalate into serious injuries.
And they say that Shih Tzus are the most gentle breed! "Lap dog" "Peaceful"... How wrong.
Mr. Cesar Millan made a deep impact on me. I started buying his books and videos.
I understood his "Exercise, Discipline and then Affection" and "Energy and Body Language" theme that he preached.
It works!
I solved the dog fighting aggression problem. I found the "troublemaker" and disciplined him. Discipline was not by caning or beating him to hurt him physically. But it was to give a touch with calm assertive energy, at the right time, to snap the dog out of his obsession. I encourage my family and maids to have that "calm and assertive" energy while at home. Exercise is also implemented so as to drain away the energy and frustration that the dogs have. We herd the 12 Shih Tzus up and down the staircase, from their bedrooms to their toilet area. And they love the exercise!
I believe in Karma with the same certainty as the laws of Gravity. My wife adopted Betsy over the internet. A week later, she entered in Celini lucky draw on the Straits Times. I thought it was one of those never-will-win type of ads on the newspaper. But she won a bed, mattress, sofa and TV stand! Also when we adopted Miki, the third dog, our businesses thrive.
Betsy came with some psychological and physical problems when we adopted her.
Physically, she had stomach problems and used to vomit and give watery stools. Her hair was a mess and had red rashes.
Psychologically, we believe she was always beaten with a stick or a hand. When I reached out to hug her, she ran, thinking that I was about to slap her. She liked to charge and had difficulty walking on the leash.
Through applying Cesar's ways and figuring out her diet, we solved the gastric and psychological issues.
And so it was time to solve the hair and skin problems of Betsy. My father trades chemicals in Jakarta, so we know who to turn to. I had the help of my father's customers who process and supply raw materials to Unilver. I learnt the chemistry and processes to make the shampoo. It was hard work physically and mentally as I had to sleep in their factories to learn and apply formulas to suit the dog skin and hair. Most of their factories are in the outskirts, away from Jakarta. Some are in the middle of palm oil plantations. Also my degree is Finance from SMU, not chemical engineering. I could remember my O Level and A Level Chemistry (I was a Triple Science student back then)... But I was determined to go all the way for my dogs. One day, I found one chemical anomaly that is present in all dog shampoos in the market. If only that anomaly is tweaked... so I tried it first.
We applied the shampoo to all the13 dogs in Indonesia, and to Betsy and Mimi and Miki in Singapore. The results are awesome! The formula was much better than even the most expensive shampoos sold in the pet shops. Whenever we go to the dog park in Bishan, people think that both our dogs just got groomed... Actually we plan to shower them the next day!
This Shampoo we brand it "Silky". Our friends and neighbours tried our shampoo formula and they too were amazed.
